WebGIS for Climate Protection and Adaptation in Hesse, Germany
Climate change adaptation is one of the main challenges in spatial planning. Priority areas for climate protection need to be identified in order for robust and sustainable measures to be implemented. Such analysis relies on a tremendous amount of data.
To reduce the planning workload in the German state of Hesse, wetransform and UWS created the spatial planning platform "WebGIS Klimaschutz und Klimaanpassung" (EN: "WebGIS Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation"). This WebGIS was launched in 2025 to provide a shared data foundation and make the many relevant parameters surrounding climate planning in Hesse accessible to a wide audience.

Maps and data have been made available to explore topics such as temperature hot and cold spots, soil sealing, vegetation coverage, potential installation sites for photovoltaic systems, and urban structure types. A large amount of this data has been derived from remote sensing, which means it is up-to-date, homogeneous, and provides comprehensive land coverage.
The WebGIS Backend
For the provision and visualisation of WMS, WFS services and OGC API Features, wetransform relies on its own geodata platform hale»connect.
hale»connect is an ideal backend for the management and publication of geospatial services, both for their integration into public WebGIS applications and for use in local GIS applications. The platform enables secure, robust, and cost efficient operations, while also providing the ability to easily expand and adapt the data sets.
The portal itself was developed together with project partner UWS.

Noteworthy aspects of this project:
- hale»connect as a powerful backend for WebGIS applications
- Publication of OGC API Features services
- Direct connection to PostgreSQL databases as a data source
- Compact, lightweight WebGIS
- Low development and operating costs
